Mariposa & the Saint
In 2012, Mariposa was sentenced to fifteen months in solitary confinement. Through letters with longtime friend and current collaborator, Julia Steele Allen, Mariposa brings her experience to the stage.
After 18 years, Mariposa is finally getting out of prison. To mark the moment, and raise funds to support securing her stable housing, we are releasing a report about the play and it’s impact as a national organizing tool, as well as a full-length video recording of the performance.
Decade of Fire
The South Bronx is Burning
In the 1970s, the Bronx was on fire. Abandoned by city government, nearly a half-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multi-ethnic neighborhood burned to the ground. While insidious government policies caused the devastation, Black and Puerto Rican residents bore the blame. Now, Bronx-born Vivian Vázquez Irizarry exposes the truth about the borough’s untold history and reveals how her community chose to resist, remain, and rebuild.
